In all honesty I fell into recording 'to be a good friend' kind of by accident. I was going through a whirlwind of change at the time - I had started a new job and was having to get up at the early hours of the morning each day to build houses, and was also navigating lots of changing relationships with others. I had friendships start to fade away and new ones beginning to take form. There were a lot of times where it was difficult to handle, but I guess out of this came an idea to make an album about friendship. The question started as 'what does it mean to be a good friend?' but throughout recording the project, the question I actually became more interested in was 'what does it mean to be a friend to yourself?'. I think in hindsight that was actually what I was missing - I felt I had really lost touch with myself and who I was. In some ways I maybe just needed to be set on the right track again, so I suppose that was what this album did for me.
Throughout the album, there are different songs that reference different 'friends' - Moses, Abel, Soren and Harvey. They actually represent real people in my life, or some amalgamation of a few different people rolled into one. It was also important to me to include real life friends on the recordings of the songs, so I ended up getting heaps of people in my room to help me bring the album to life. It meant a lot to me that they could all be involved, as the album wouldn't be anything near what it was without them.
